What is hospital accreditation?

Accreditation is defined as “ A public recognition of the achievement of accreditation standards by a healthcare organization, demonstrated through an independent external peer assessment of that organization's level of performance in relation to the standards".

Broadly speaking, there exist two types of hospital accreditation in India at present

1) Joint Commission International (JCI), USA

The Joint Commission launched its international accreditation program in 1999. Joint Commission International accreditation standards are based on international consensus standards and set uniform, achievable expectations for structures, processes and outcomes for hospitals. Over 220 public and private health care organizations in 33 countries have been accredited by JCI.

2) NABH - India’s National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers

National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) is a constituent board of Government of India’s apex organisation called Quality Council of India, set up to establish and operate accreditation programme for healthcare organizations. In a NABH accredited hospital, there is strong focus on patient rights and benefits, patient safety, control and prevention of infections in hospitals and practising good patient care protocols like special care for vulnerable groups, critically ill patients and better and controlled clinical outcome. The NABH standards relate to the local culture and systems, yet at the same time, are benchmarked with the best international standards. International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua) has accredited “Standards for Hospitals” developed by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH, India ). The approval of ISQua authenticates that NABH standards are in consonance with the global benchmarks set by ISQua. The hospitals accredited by NABH therefore also enjoy international recognition.
